But, because people ask…
My Podcasting Gear
My podcast conversations are recorded ON LOCATION and often times in public spaces. That means, I need gear that’s mobile, easy to set up, and as fail-proof as possible. The Zoom H6 allows me to visually check levels without headphones for my main interviews (Remember to make sure phones are put on airplane mode or at-least four feet away while recording.) and after a ton of testing, the Shure MV88 is THE BEST mobile mic out there. It’s on me at all times while traveling.
Music Gear
Instead of a comprehensive list of all the gear I use on a regular basis (holy crap, that would be so absurd to try and put together) these are some of the more esoteric items that I’ve discovered and get asked about regularly.
A word on headphones: After years of searching and countless hours of listening, the Shure SRH840’s are the greatest headphones I’ve ever used. Period. Their frequency response gives an honest representation of a mix and, unlike other studio headphones, it’s impedance of 44ohms means you don’t need a pre-amp so you can use them in all listening scenarios. I live, eat, sleep, travel, mix, record, and make love to my wife while wearing them. (ok… maybe not that last one.) Pro tip: I cut the headband fabric off with a razor-blade, pull out the bulky rubber headband pad underneath and replace it with this Geekria headband. Far more comfortable and cuts down on a surprising amount of unneeded weight.
A word on cases: If I’m playing a local gig, I’m walking in with this Levy gig-bag. (I’m proud to be endorsed by this family run company out of Canada) But, If I’m flying or on the road, each bass is in one of these SKB cases. After hundreds of back-and-forths with flight attendants (what i’m convinced is what caused all my grey hair) I no longer cary-on my bass on flights. This case is TSA Hate-Proof and that’s saying something. Pro-Tip: I always put bight-colored gaff tape on mine and write “GUITAR! NOT A GUN!” Because you will be asked.
A word on the Novation Bass Station: Like I said, this isn’t a comprehensive list of all my instruments on here, but I get asked about this synth EVERY SINGLE gig. It may look like a toy, but this is a heavy-hitter and possibly the most underrated analogue (yup, analogue) mono bass synth on the market. The Gibraltar stand I put it on, allowing me to tilt it away from me is a regular question too. It’s made for electronic drum pads but works great for smaller synths or even my Moog.
